Ademola Lookman has expressed his joy and gratitude after being named the 2024 CAF Men’s Player of the Year at a grand ceremony in Marrakech, Morocco on Monday night.
The 27-year-old forward capped off a phenomenal year, contributing 27 goals and 12 assists for both club and country.
His remarkable achievements include a hat-trick in the Europa League final, where he led Atalanta to victory over Bayer Leverkusen, and playing a key role in Nigeria’s run to the AFCON final.
Lookman’s stellar performances also earned him a place in the Europa League Team of the Year and a respectable 14th-place finish in the Ballon d’Or rankings.
Speaking on stage after receiving the award, Lookman reflected on his career’s highs and lows, particularly his struggles just four years ago:
“I want to thank almighty God for everything that He’s been doing in my life He’s been blessing me with.
I want to thank the Presidents, all my teammates, club and country, for their support and the love that they give me.
“This award is for me, my family, my nation and to be recognise as the best player in Africa is something incredible. I am extremely proud.”
He went on to share an inspiring message about overcoming adversity:
“Just over four years ago I failed in front of the world. Fast forward four years, I’m the best player in Africa.
“I want to say to all the young children and people watching this, don’t let your failures weigh you down or break your wings. Turn your pain into your power and continue to fly. God bless.”
Lookman’s victory marks the second consecutive year a Nigerian has won the CAF Men’s Player of the Year award, following Victor Osimhen’s triumph in 2023.
With this historic back-to-back recognition, Lookman’s story serves as both a testament to perseverance and a beacon of inspiration for aspiring athletes across Africa and beyond.
