Some Arsenal fans out there want Jose Mourinho to take over for Unai Emery, but while Emery may be on his last leg, Mourinho is a horrible answer.
After dropping more points at home, many Arsenal fans have called it the last straw for Unai Emery. It’s time for someone else. And for the past few weeks, there’s been a name floating about that I truly can’t believe—Jose Mourinho.
This has nothing to do with Mourinho’s relationship with Arsene Wenger. While there was a lot of bad blood between them back in the day, they respect each other now. That’s not a factor at all. What is a factor is Mourinho’s track record at clubs.
I mean the long-term track record. Not the short term. Because I don’t know if you noticed, but Arsenal are a long-term club. They want consistency and competitiveness, but can’t seem to find either right now.
Mourinho would bring competitiveness in the here and now, but look and what he did at Manchester United. Is that what we want here? Look at how he left Chelsea in a tumultuous state. Sure, he found temporary success at Chelsea, but nothing prolonged.
That’s the thing. Nothing is ever prolonged with Mourinho. And at United, it wasn’t even in the here and now. His track record has gotten worse and worse since his early successes because it felt like he ran out of ideas. Teams knew how to combat a Mourinho side and he wasn’t learning.
Maybe there’s a lot to like about Mourinho for some, maybe there’s a belief that he can maximize the talent we have, since he already has a rapport with so many of the players. But I’m not into it. Not in the least. Give me a guy with a positive history for the long-term. Not Mourinho, who often leaves clubs in worse stats then he finds them. Even if he does notch some trophies in between.
Unai Emery may very well not be the guy to take the club forward, and I think the club are currently trying to sort out what the best way forward is in that likely scenario. But can’t be Mourinho. That’s not an answer, that’s a panic button.
He’s gaining popularity, which is baffling to me. It’s like in moments of desperation, some people lose the ability to think constructively. Don’t let that man near this club.
