James Peter reveals how Amunike almost missed out on Eagles ’94 squad

A former member of the 1994 coaching crew of the Super Eagles’ team James Peter’s has revealed how Clement Westerhoff refused Amunike when he was spotted to play for the senior national team.

In a chat with brila.net, Peter stated that ‘the shape of his legs was what made the Technical adviser Westerhoff to reject him.

 

However, I stood on my ground looking at how amazing Amunike was doing at Zamalek at that time.

 

“I told westeroff we cannot afford to lose such prospect’ James Peter’s said.

 

Speaking further he said Amunike was picked to play for the senior national team and we went all the way with the exploit Amunike to win the 1994 Nation’s cup in Tunisia and went further and create history then at the world cup in USA 1994 as the best African country then, He concluded.

 

Amunike later went on to win the prestigious African Footballer of the year in 1994.

 

The former Barcelona winger won the African Cup of Nations with Nigeria in 1994 and the Olympic gold with the Super Eagles two years later.

 

He is currently the Chief Coach of the Tanzania National Football team.
