Estadio Algarve witnessed a thrilling pre-season encounter on Friday night as Fulham emerged victorious over Benfica with a 1-0 win, thanks to Alex Iwobi’s crucial goal.
The Cottagers asserted dominance in the first half, creating numerous opportunities, while Benfica displayed a stronger performance after the break.
Despite the Portuguese side’s efforts, Iwobi’s goal remained the decisive moment of the match.
Early in the game, Rodrigo Muniz showcased his skills with a slick turn in his own half, bypassing the Benfica defense within five minutes.
His attempt to set up Iwobi, however, was deflected for a corner.
Tom Cairney’s ensuing delivery struck the post, keeping the score level.
Iwobi had another chance with a long-range strike that flew over the bar.
Fulham continued to press, and from another corner, Muniz headed Cairney’s cross into the waiting hands of Benfica’s goalkeeper, Anatoliy Trubin.
The breakthrough came two minutes later through a clinical counter-attack.
Adama Traoré’s impressive run dismantled Benfica’s defense, creating a four-on-two advantage.
Traoré passed to Iwobi, who then played a precise one-two with Antonee Robinson before slotting the ball inside the near post.
