Super Eagles winger Moses Simon downplayed the brilliance of his stunning late goal after guiding FC Nantes to a 1-0 win over Rennes in the fiery Breton derby.
With both teams struggling in the lower half of the Ligue 1 table, the match appeared destined for a stalemate until Simon’s brilliance broke the deadlock in the 89th minute.
The Nigerian winger displayed his skill and composure, receiving the ball on the left wing, weaving past two defenders inside the box, and curling a sublime effort into the far top corner.
Rennes believed they had salvaged a draw in the 95th minute, but their goal was ruled out after a VAR review, sealing the win for Nantes.
In his post-match interview with DAZN, Simon downplayed the spectacular nature of his goal, focusing instead on the derby’s significance.
“I can’t say it was magical because I already did it against Lens (2022-2023 season). So, I think it was the perfect moment, especially in the derby” Simon said.
“We needed the points; that’s the most important thing for us. We got them, and we are very happy.”
Simon’s performance highlights his impressive form this season, with four goals in 13 Ligue 1 appearances.
The victory also ended a woeful run for Nantes, who had gone 10 consecutive matches without a win (six defeats, four draws).
The much-needed triumph lifted Nantes to 13th place on the Ligue 1 table with 14 points from 14 matches, providing a vital boost to their campaign.
