It’ll Be Disastrous! Former Super Eagles Coach Describes Team’s Potential World Cup Absence

Former Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr has expressed grave concerns about the team’s prospects of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Rohr described the potential failure to qualify as “disastrous” and “a little bit shameful” for a football nation of Nigeria’s stature.

The German led Nigeria to the 2018 World Cup in Russia, but was dismissed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) during the final phase of the 2022 qualifiers.

His departure proved costly, as the team subsequently failed to qualify for the tournament following an aggregate defeat to Ghana.

Currently, the Super Eagles are struggling in the qualification campaign for the 2026 World Cup.

They have yet to secure a victory in four matches, accumulating only three points out of a possible twelve.

This poor performance has been exacerbated by a defeat to Benin Republic, now coached by Rohr himself. The Super Eagles are languishing in second-to-last place in Group C.

Reflecting on the matches play so far in Group C, Rohr expressed disappointment in Nigeria’s poor start in the race for the World.

“If they miss another one, for such a football country with the best players in Africa, it would be a little bit shameful,” he said.

The 70 year-old Coach added, “So, I think the players will do everything to go there (World Cup), and also the federation and the staff. But now, of course they must be realistic and say that it’s only three points in four games.”
