Super Eagles and Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Okoh Boniface has returned to his club with an injury following his involvement in Nigeria’s recent international matches.
The 23-year-old featured in both games during the international break, including the draw against the Republic of Benin and the defeat to Rwanda in the final AFCON 2025 qualifiers.
According to Bild, Boniface was absent from training on Thursday, fueling speculation about an injury sustained while on duty with Nigeria.
Bayer Leverkusen, however, has not yet released an official statement regarding his condition.
The Bundesliga club’s head coach, Xabi Alonso, is expected to provide clarity on Boniface’s situation during his pre-match press conference ahead of their game against FC Heidenheim.
Boniface has been a crucial figure for Bayer Leverkusen this season, contributing eight goals and one assist. His absence would be a significant blow to the squad’s attacking setup.
This development raises concerns over a possible recurrence of the muscle-tendon injury in his right adductor, which sidelined Boniface earlier in January while training with the Super Eagles in the UAE.
That injury had forced him to miss the Africa Cup of Nations.
Should Boniface be unavailable for the Heidenheim match, Czech striker Patrik Schick is likely to step into the starting lineup.
Leverkusen will be hoping their star forward’s injury is not serious, given his importance to the team’s impressive season so far.
