Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho has completed his medical ahead of a loan move to English Championship side Middlesbrough, according to Sky Sports.
The Nigerian striker is set to join the 2004 EFL Cup winners on a temporary deal until the end of the season, with an option for a permanent transfer.
Middlesbrough will cover nearly the entire €2 million (approximately N3 billion) that Iheanacho is still owed by Sevilla for the remainder of the campaign.
Struggles at Sevilla & Search for Game Time
Iheanacho, 28, joined Sevilla from Leicester City last summer but has struggled to make an impact, failing to score in nine La Liga appearances. His only three goals for the club came in the Copa del Rey.
Sevilla have since signed fellow Nigerian forward Akor Adams from Montpellier, further limiting Iheanacho’s chances. With his future uncertain and game time scarce, the club opted to offload him on a temporary basis.
Iheanacho has not played for Sevilla since the start of the January transfer window due to transfer speculation and a minor injury. The La Liga side has made it clear that they do not see him as part of their long-term plans.
Return to England & Rejected Offers
Determined to return to the UK, Iheanacho turned down offers from Greek clubs PAOK and Panathinaikos, as well as Italian side Venezia.
He was also a target for Scottish champions Celtic, but negotiations broke down, ending hopes of a reunion with his former Leicester City boss, Brendan Rodgers.
Middlesbrough, currently seventh in the Championship with 44 points from 29 matches, are pushing for promotion.
Alongside Iheanacho, they are also set to sign Samuel Iling-Junior from Aston Villa, as Michael Carrick looks to bolster his squad for the play-off race.
