I want to improve at Ajax — Calvin Bassey

Calvin Bassey is desperate to adapt to Ajax, but won’t give in to criticisms from fans and Club legends.

The defender has been dragged to the mud by several former Players, including Wesley Sneijder and Rafael van Der Vart, who claim the Nigerian isn’t good enough for the club.

Ajax paid £16m to sign the former Leicester City’s academy graduate from Glasgow Rangers last summer.

He was regular under sacked Alfred Schreiber, making 16 starts in all competitions but was dropped to the bench by interim boss Jonny Heitinga.

In an interview with Ajax Showtime, Bassey said he was not bothered by the criticisms from fans of the club.

“I think it’s a wonderful club with a lot of history. When you go to a club as big as Ajax there will always be certain expectations.

“I think it’s good to set the bar high and it’s certainly high here. We also expect that of ourselves. So we also demand a lot from each other.”

Bassey started weekend’s league win over RKC Waalwijk from the bench, managed to complete 45 passes and assisted a goal.

“I want to better understand Ajax’s style and adapt myself to it. I want the style to suit me more. That’s my goal now.

“I can do anything as long as I want it bad enough,” Bassey concluded.
