Randy Waldrum has officially stepped down from his position as Head Coach of Nigeria’s Super Falcons.
The news of his resignation was shared in a letter sent to the Nigeria Football Federation, in which Waldrum cited his wife’s health as the primary reason for his departure.
“It’s been a very difficult few weeks following the Olympics, with my wife’s health issues and the worries that obviously come with that. After much thought and consideration, I am hereby resigning my position as Head Coach of the Super Falcons. This will allow the NFF ample time to find the next manager to take over this incredible squad,” Waldrum wrote.
Reflecting on his time with the team, Waldrum expressed pride in his contributions, stating that he believes he is leaving the squad in a stronger position than when he first arrived.
“I’ve always wanted to leave a project better off than we met it, and I believe I’ve managed to do that with the Super Falcons. We have built a squad that can compete consistently with any top team in the world. The future is bright with the current team, as well as the upcoming U20 and U17 players,” he added.
Waldrum also highlighted the team’s achievement of qualifying for the Olympics for the first time in 16 years, overcoming African heavyweights Cameroon and South Africa along the way.
Hired in 2020, Waldrum led the Super Falcons to a fourth-place finish in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, secured the team’s qualification to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the Olympic Games in Paris.
