Coach Emmanuel Amuneke says he has no regret joining the Super Eagles technical crew that failed to qualify Nigeria for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Amuneke previously rejected calls to serve as assistant to former coach Gernot Rohr, but he had a change of heart and accepted to work as an immediate assistant to Austin Eguavoen in February.
Amuneke’s appointment came after the Super Eagles failed to reach the quarter-final of the 2021 African Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
The reason for his appointment was to strengthen the technical crew ahead of the all-important playoff against the Black Stars of Ghana.
However, the move didn’t work out as the Black edged the Super Eagles over the two legs and booked their place among the elite football nations in Qatar.
Following the disappointment, the Nigeria Football Federation decided to terminate the appointment of the entire Super Eagles coaching crew, including that of Amuneke.
Reacting to the decision, in an exclusive interview with www.brila.net, Amuneke, said he has no regret accepting the offer to join Austin Eguavoen’s led coaching crew, adding that he’s willing to serve the nation again, whenever he’s called upon.
“I have no regret coming on board to join the technical crew, I would have turned them down, it was an opportunity to serve Nigerians and I hope I’ll be in a better position next time to serve them more .”
“I was once the coach of Tanzania and it was Nigerians that demanded me to come, so I have no regret accepting the challenge, but as I said, we just have to find the strength to move from here. It is a difficult moment for everyone, including myself.” He told Brila.net.
The former Taifa Stars of Tanzania boss also apologized to the Nigerian football community for failing to deliver the ticket for Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.
