Taiwo Awoniyi was the stand-out performer in Union Berlin’s 2-1 defeat to  Eintracht Frankfurt at the Deutsche Bank Park on Sunday.

Awoniyi who is one of the best forwards in Germany at the moment fired blank but was outstanding all through the encounter.

Awoniyi went into the game at the back of his heroic performance in the Berlin derby — where he scored for the Urs Fischer’s men.

The Nigerian who has scored eight goals in the league this season won the penalty that led to Union Berlin’s only goal of the game.

Djibril Sow scored the opening goal for the hosts in the 22nd minute. Awoniyi had the chance to restore parity for Union Berlin almost immediately instantly, but goalkeeper Kevin Trapp parried his shot away to safety.

Awoniyi continued to torment the Frankfurt defense and finally won a penalty for Union Berlin after Evan N’Dicka brought him down in the box.

German attacker Max Kruse made no mistake from the spot as he slot the ball past the goalkeeper.

With 15 minutes left to play, Union Berlin head coach Urs Fischer opted to replace Awoniyi with Andreas Voglsammer and the decision handed the initiative to the home side.

However, Evan N’Dicka punished Urs Fischer’s tactical blunder as he headed home the winner in the 95th-minute, thanks to Filip Kostic’s cross.
