How De Ligt beat Chukwueze to Kopa trophy

Nigerian winger Samuel Chukwueze has missed out in the 2019 Kopa trophy award.

The award which was designed for young outstanding players was won by Dutch defender Matthijs De Ligt who currently plays for Juventus of Italy at the award ceremony in France on Monday.

Chukwueze enjoyed a break out year with his Spanish side Villarreal last term , but his performance was not enough to earn him the accolade ahead of the Dutch younger defender.

Chukwueze was also listed for the golden boy award won by Portuguese forward Joa Felix.

De Ligt, 19 was instrumental in Ajax Amsterdam’s great run in the UEFA Champions League blast season where they narrowly missed out in the final to Tottenham Hotspurs.

The former Ajax captain also partner Virgil Van Dijk in the heart of the Dutch defense as they reach the final of UEFA Euro Nations league and qualified for Euro 2020.

The outstanding performances caught the attention of big Clubs in Europe before he eventually signed for the Italian giants last summer.

“It’s a big honour for me to be here. I want to thank Ajax’s support, Juventus, my family and girlfriend. Proud to achieve this”. De Ligt said.
