It was a sad moment for Daniel Akpeyi as his club Kaizer Chiefs failed in their bid to win CAF Champions League for the first time in their history.
Akpeyi was in goal as the Glamour Boys lost 3-0 to Junior Ajayi’s Al Ahly of Egypt in the final of the African number one club competition on Saturday.
After missing some scoring opportunities, the Kaizer Chiefs were reduced to 10 man as Happy Mashiane was shown a straight red in the first half added time.
Akpeyi and his teammates failed to recover from Happy Mashiane’s dismissal and Al Ahly took the initiative from them in the second half.
Mohamed Sherif opened scoring for Al Ahly in the 53rd minutes, Mohamed Kafsha doubled the lead in the 64th minutes and ElSoulia completed the rout in the 74th minutes to end the match 3-0.
Meanwhile, Junior Ajayi came as a late substitute in the match for the Egyptian premier league giants.
The 25 years old was dropped to the bench because of match fitness related issue, but replaced Mohamed Sherif with few minutes left to have a taste of the final.
While Al Ahly FC became the first team to win the CAF Champions League title 10 times, Kaizer Chiefs failed to become the third South African side to win the prestigious tournament.
