Chelsea are exploring the possibility of re-signing England defender Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, three years after selling him for £18 million.
The 24-year-old, who has emerged as one of the Premier League’s most reliable defenders, is reportedly on Chelsea’s shortlist of central defensive targets.
Chelsea’s Interest in Marc Guehi
Chelsea’s current ownership under Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital appears keen to address the club’s defensive concerns.
While no official approach has been made to Crystal Palace, Guehi’s representatives are aware of the interest from his former club.
Guehi has 18 months remaining on his five-year contract at Palace, where he has been a mainstay since his 2021 transfer.
The club fended off significant interest from Newcastle United during the summer, rejecting four bids, the last of which was worth up to £65 million.
Defensive Reinforcements Needed
Chelsea’s pursuit of Guehi is as a result of the team’s urgent need for defensive reinforcements, following injuries to key players.
Wesley Fofana is sidelined with a serious hamstring injury that manager Enzo Maresca suggests could keep him out for the season.
However, those close to Fofana are hinting a quicker recovery. Additionally, Benoît Badiashile is unavailable until at least February.
In light of these setbacks, Chelsea are also considering recalling Trevoh Chalobah from his loan spell at Palace and have recently brought back Argentinian defender Aaron Anselmino from Boca Juniors.
Marc Guehi’s Rapid Rise
Since leaving Chelsea, Guehi has developed into an international-caliber defender. He has made 22 appearances for England and is regarded as one of Gareth Southgate’s trusted players.
At Palace, Guehi has become a leader on and off the pitch, further cementing his reputation as a top-tier defender.
Chelsea’s Vision
If Guehi were to return to Stamford Bridge, it would be a reversal of fortunes, following Chelsea’s long-term vision under their new owners.
For now, Crystal Palace remains firm in their valuation of the player, but Chelsea’s determination to bolster their defense could lead to a high-stakes transfer battle in the coming windows.
