History-Making Shoretire Set to Bid Farewell to Manchester United

Newcastle-born Nigerian attacking midfielder Shola Shoretire is set to bid goodbye to Manchester United after a decade with the club.

The 20 year-old joined Manchester United Academy in 2013 and gained promotion to the first team in 2021, where he played 5 matches for the team scoring no goals.

However, the Red Devils have decided to let the youngster go, as he is not in their first-team plans.

Shoretire, who has not featured since Erik ten Hag took over as the club’s head coach two years ago, has chosen to leave United in pursuit of more opportunities and regular game time.

On 25th February 2021, Shoretire replaced Mason Greenwood in the 76th minute of a Europa League clash against Real Sociedad, setting a new record as the club’s youngest-ever player in a European match at the age of 17 years and 23 days.

He also set a club record when he replaced Marcus Rashford on February 21, 2021, making his Premier League debut with the highest squad number ever worn by a Manchester United player in a competitive men’s first-team fixture.

Shoretire’s contract with the Red Devils expired on June 30 and according to the Manchester Evening News, Shoretire is among nine Manchester United players leaving the club, the others being Anthony Martial, Raphael Varane, Brandon Williams, Jonny Evans, Tom Heaton, Charlie McNeill, Kie Plumley, and Marcus Lawrence.

The 20-year-old has been with Manchester United for more than a decade, joining the club after stints at Whitley Bay Boys Club, Newcastle City Juniors, Wallsend Boys Club, Hebburn Town, and Cramlington Juniors.
