Southampton manager Ivan Jurić has heaped praise on Paul Onuachu after the Nigerian striker netted a late winner in the club’s 2-1 victory over Ipswich Town on Saturday.
The win marked Southampton’s second Premier League victory of the season and provided a much-needed boost in their battle to avoid relegation.
How the Game Unfolded
Onuachu’s compatriot, Joe Aribo, put the Saints ahead in the 21st minute with a strike that Ipswich goalkeeper Arijanet Muric failed to keep out. However, Liam Delap restored parity for the hosts on the half-hour mark.
With the match heading toward a draw, Onuachu stepped up with the decisive goal just three minutes from time.
Substitute Sulemana Kamaldeen unleashed a powerful 20-yard strike that Muric could only parry into Onuachu’s path, and the towering forward wasted no time in smashing the rebound into the net.
Jurić Backs Onuachu for More Goals
Southampton boss Ivan Jurić believes the former Genk hitman has much more to offer, praising his work ethic and ability to deliver under pressure.
“It was a great moment. He [Onuachu] deserved it because he really worked hard. It’s his second goal, I think he can score more, but he really worked hard for the team,” Jurić told the club’s official website.
Aribo Named Man of the Match
Onuachu compatriot, Joe Aribo was recognized for his stellar performance, winning Southampton’s Man of the Match award after polling 36.8% of the fan votes, beating nine other nominees.
Despite being deployed out of position at left center-back due to injuries in the squad, the Super Eagles star adapted well, boasting an 80.5% pass completion rate and one successful dribble while helping Southampton withstand Ipswich’s second-half pressure.
Liam Delap, who scored Ipswich’s equalizer, finished second in the voting with 32.4%, while Onuachu claimed third place with 12.8%.
A Crucial Win, But the Fight Continues
The victory gives Southampton only their second league win of the season, though they remain eight points from safety.
Onuachu and Aribo have been key figures in Southampton’s relegation battle. Onuachu now has two goals, despite struggling for form since arriving from Genk, while Aribo has contributed three goals in 23 league appearances as he looks to revive his career.
