Just a few months ago, Cyriel Dessers looked destined for the exit door at Rangers. Struggling for form and benched in favor of Hamza Igamane, transfer rumors swirled around the Nigerian striker.
However, his agent, Stijn Francis, has now shed light on why the forward chose to remain at the club.
Recently, Dessers staged a remarkable comeback, scoring a Scottish Cup hat-trick and finding the net in the UEFA Europa League against Manchester United a performance that solidified his importance at the club.
Why would a player with multiple offers on the table choose to stay at a club where he had lost his starting spot?
Interest from Clubs but No Suitable Offers
Despite reported interest from Cagliari, Empoli, and Leganés, a transfer never materialized, as most clubs were unwilling to meet Rangers’ terms.
“There is still a lot of probing, but clubs are pushing much less,” Francis told Sporza via Voetbalnieuws.
“Look at Cyriel Dessers: he had ten offers, but the market is much more difficult at that time.”
Many wanted to rent him, but Rangers only wanted to sell. And that is not ideal for the player’s focus.”
Dessers has rediscovered his scoring touch, netting six goals in his last six matches, proving his critics wrong.
Overall, he has scored 18 goals in 37 appearances across all competitions this season, including eight goals and two assists in 22 league games.
His resurgence has not only strengthened Rangers’ title push but has also reignited hopes of an international recall.
Super Eagles Call-Up on the Horizon?
Despite being overlooked throughout the AFCON qualifiers, even when he was outperforming some selected strikers, the 30-year-old will be hoping his recent form earns him a place in Nigeria’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in March.
