Former Nigerian international, Greg Etafia has cautioned the Super Eagles not to underestimate South Africa in their upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifier in Uyo.
In a chat with Brila.net, Etafia highlighted the confidence South Africa has gained from their narrow loss to Nigeria in the AFCON semifinals.
“South Africa has a lot of confidence now. They believe they can match Nigeria in terms of players and playing style,” Etafia said.
He noted that many South African players come from the same club, Mamelodi Sundowns, which has enhanced their teamwork and understanding on the field.
“Most of their players are from Sundowns, which makes their job easier in terms of understanding and gameplay. Hugo Broos has trusted this team and made few changes.”
Etafia also warned Nigeria to be cautious of conceding free kicks in dangerous areas.
“Nigeria needs to be careful about set-pieces near the box. Mokwena, for instance, is very skilled at striking from free kicks; he can bend it and hit it both ways. He’s a very, very good player.”
He concluded on the importance of staying alert and not allowing South Africa opportunities for set-pieces, which could prove costly for Nigeria.
