Godwin Aguda Fires Rivers United past Sunshine Stars

Rivers United bounced back to winning ways after securing a hard fought 1-0 win over Sunshine Stars in Port Harcourt, Sunday.

Stanley Eguma’s men were coming off the back of an embarrassing 4-1 loss to Lobi Stars last Sunday, while Sunshine Stars were still searching for their first three points after ten matches.

In a keenly contested game, the hosts were dominant and made it count against the struggling Sunshine  Stars.

The visitors came off the block firing, Waheed Adebayo’s powerful drive failed to beat Rivers United Goalkeeper Ospini Egbe.

Another goalscoring fell to the visitors in the 16th minute after good attacking play, but Sadeeq Yusuf’s effort was cleared off the line by defenders.

In the 26th minute, Egbe denied Adebayo again from close range after he was played through by Sadiq Yusuf.

Sunshine Stars were made to pay for the misses as Godwin Aguda found a way past Uche Okafor to give the hosts the lead just past the half hour mark.

Coach Gbenga Ogunbote was forced to make two changes before halftime; Tolu Oluwole replaced Qazeem Obamigba while injured Uzochukwu Ugonna made way for Yakubu Habib.

Two minutes before the break, Yusuf went down under a challenge in the box, but the penalty shouts were ignored by the Referee.

The second half kicked off with chances falling to both sides, Okafor was the first to be called into action in the 55th minute, before Egbe prevented Yusuf from tapping home in the 75th minute.

Two minutes later, Okafor made another point blank save to keep Sunshine Stars in the game.

Sunshine Stars later piled on the pressure on the Pride of Rivers in for a late leveler, but the hosts stood firm to see out the win.

Sunshine Stars have now failed to win any of their last eleven matches in the league.

They are currently 17th on the log with 18 points from same number  of games, while Rivers United moved up to 6th.
