Jose Peseiro believes Goalkeepers need more encouragement from the fans, and not criticisms.
The Portuguese watched from sideline as Francis Uzoho commited another blunder, diverting a cross into his own net during Super Eagles’s friendly against Saudi Arabia on Friday.
After the game, Uzoho whose howler cost the Super Eagles a spot at 2022 FIFA World Cup was hammered by fans for his underwhelming performance against the Green Falcons.
Despite his mistake, Peseiro backed the Goalkeeper to bounce back from such errors, saying he’ll improve with time and experience.
“When I arrived, there was much talk about the goalkeepers, a lot of people wanted me to change the goalkeepers.
”I spoke with all the goalkeepers, none of them feel comfortable because the fans always attack them.
“I like our players, when they make mistakes it is my responsibility.
“The goalkeepers never play free or calm because of the people. I don’t know why they attack the goalkeepers every time.
“Why don’t they attack the strikers when they lose the ball or miss a goal, why?
“They could make mistakes, it is my responsibility. Next time I need to train him (Uzoho) better.” The former Venezuela boss stated.
The Super Eagles will face the Mambas of Mozambique in their next friendly on Monday and Uzoho is likely to keep his place in the starting 11.
