The head coach of the Benin Republic, Gernot Rohr, is gearing up for a crucial match against Nigeria’s Super Eagles in the qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Franco-German coach is set to announce his squad for the highly anticipated encounter on Thursday.

Rohr, who previously managed Nigeria for six years before being dismissed by the Nigeria Football Federation, has a history with the Super Eagles.

In June, he orchestrated a stunning 2-1 victory over his former team during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, a result that significantly jeopardized Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the expanded FIFA World Cup.

The defeat also led to the resignation of Nigeria’s manager, Finidi George who has now been replaced by Bruno Labbadia.

As the two teams prepare to face off again at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Saturday, September 7, Gernot Rohr is determined to replicate his previous success.

The coach has a strong track record at the stadium, having lost only once in nearly six years.

The Benin Republic, also known as the Cheetahs, are expected to begin their preparations for the upcoming matches this weekend.

Following their clash with Nigeria, the Cheetahs will host the Mediterranean Knights of Libya at the Felix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan for a matchday two fixture on Tuesday, September 10.
