Super Eagles Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr is expected in Kano where he’ll observe the team’s preparation for the CHAN qualifiers and scout for a goalkeeper ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Cameroon and Zambia.
Rohr will also work closely with an unnamed Goalkeeper trainer who will be on hand to “assist” current trainer Mr. Alloy Agu to identify and motivate the goalies invited.
This information was disclosed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Communications Director, Ademola Olajire in a chat with Anthony Bekederemo for brila.net
Olajire did not confirm the specific date of Rohr’s arrival, but he maintains that the German “is expected” to be in Kano.
‘I may not be specific but what I can say is he’s expected to see the CHAN team in Kano.
‘He wants to be there to see what they are doing and especially to look out for a home based goalkeeper, one of whom could be in goal in the match against Cameroon and probably Zambia,’ Olajire said.
Recently, brila.net reported a story about the appointment of another trainer sanctioned by Rohr to help facilitate the scouting of a capable home based goalkeeper for the World Cup qualifiers.
That report was dismissed as a rumour by the Technical Director of the NFF, Bitrus Bewarang. But, Olajire has now confirmed Alloy Agu will work with another trainer.
He said, ‘ A new Coach will be joining and supporting Mr Alloy Agu in building up the confidence of the home based goalkeeper.
‘Rohr will also be around to monitor the team and sanction which goalkeeper makes the cut for the qualifiers against Cameroon and Zambia.’
Super Eagles Coach, Salisu Yusuf invited four NPFL goalkeepers for the CHAN qualifiers including former junior International Dele Ajiboye and Theophilus Afelokhai.
Third choice Eagles goalkeeper, Ikechukwu Ezenwa also got an invite along with Okiemute Odah.
The team’s camp officially opened on Monday, July 23.
