Yahuza Bala’s 18th minute spectacular strike  earned Gateway United all maximum points away at local rivals Stormers Sports Club.
A game between the two Abeokuta based Nigeria National League sides lived up to expectations at the MKO Abiola Stadium as home fans trooped out largely to see the first ever league encounter between the two sides.
Though Stormers were the hosts, Gateway United did feel at home at their home ground.
Ogunleye Sulaimon and Odusina Sunkanmi started the game with some exciting synergy in the final third, but the hosts’ defenders were resolute. Nonetheless, Gateway United continued to attack, and it paid off in the 18th minute.
Yahuza Bala found himself one on one with a defender, his excellent cut back took him past the marker and he sent in a goal of the season contender which beat home Goalkeeper, Ikenna Benjamin hands down.
After a pep talk from the Chief of Staff to the Ogun State governor, Alhaji Shuaib Salisu at the break, hostilities resumed and  Gateway United Goalkeeper, Araromi Ibukun had to be at his superlative best to deny Stormers’ Kayode Oke.
The final scare came in the last minute of added time when Oluwaseun Adekunle rose highest in the Gateway United box, his header was denied by the crossbar. It was the deciding action of the game as Toyin Ayinla’s men ran away with a vital away victory.
The derby victory tightens Gateway United’s grip at the top of the table with 15 points as the Ogun State sponsored side continue their quest for promotion into the topflight league.
Coach Toyin Ayinla said his side’s show of tenacity made the difference in the derby encounter.
“It was a though game, just like our previous wins. Our goal came a bit early after settling into the game so quickly. It was home away from home at the stadium, so it was easy for the boys to navigate but Stormers did give a good fight. Quite a hard nut to crack. We knew we had to bring in our  a-game”
“The result of hard work is definitely more work. So we won’t let this go into our head. We want to make the state and our fans proud this season. Interestingly, the Chief of Staff was here at half time to encourage the team as he reiterated government’s support. It’s a marathon, so will take it step by step. Our attention has shifted to the next game which is at home” Â He concluded.
