Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini has singled out Ademola Lookman as a key factor behind the club’s resurgence and recent success.
La Dea clinched their first major trophy in over six decades by lifting the UEFA Europa League last season; their first title since the 1962/63 campaign.
Lookman played a starring role, netting a historic hat-trick in the final against Bayer Leverkusen, who had been unbeaten in the Bundesliga that season.
This season, Atalanta has carried that momentum into Serie A.
The team currently sits second on the table, just one point behind leaders Napoli. Lookman’s standout performances have been crucial to their form.
The Nigerian winger has already registered nine goals and five assists in 15 appearances across all competitions.
His consistency has also earned him personal accolades: he finished 14th in the Ballon d’Or rankings and is in contention for the FIFA Best Awards.
Furthermore, Lookman is the frontrunner for the CAF Player of the Year award, which will be announced on December 16.
Speaking to reporters, Gasperini praised Lookman’s impact both on and off the pitch.
“We are in a good period of form in Italy and Europe. I’m happy with the performances and results we are getting,” Gasperini said.
Winning the Europa League last season helped us grow in confidence and self-belief.
Many new players have arrived and are improving, but it was last season’s success, driven by players like Lookman, that set the tone.”
With Lookman continuing to impress, Atalanta looks poised for another memorable season.
