Frank Onyeka Assists on Bundesliga Debut as Augsburg Beat St. Pauli 3-1

Super Eagles midfielder, Frank Onyeka made a strong start to his Bundesliga career, helping Augsburg secure a 3-1 victory over Dapo Afolayan’s FC St. Pauli at the WWK ARENA, on Sunday.

Onyeka joined Augsburg on a deadline-day loan move from Brentford. He was unavailable for the club’s 4-0 loss to Heidenheim before the international break.

 

 

However, Augsburg head coach Jess Thorup included him in the starting lineup for his debut against St. Pauli, where he impressed throughout the match.

 

 

 

The Nigerian midfielder nearly marked his debut with a goal in the 12th minute, pouncing on a loose ball after Marius Wolf’s cross was cleared, but his long-range volley missed the target.

 

 

 

After Wolf opened the scoring for Augsburg in the 47th minute, Onyeka helped in doubling their lead.

 

 

 

In the 67th minute, he delivered a perfect curling cross to the back post, which super sub Phillip Tietz converted with a header into the bottom corner.

 

 

Onyeka came close to adding more to Augsburg’s tally, breaking through on goal in the 70th minute, but, he mis-kicked a pass to teammate Essende, missing a golden opportunity.

 

 

 

St. Pauli pulled one back through Carlo Boukhalfa with 15 minutes remaining, but Kabadayi sealed the win for Augsburg with a stoppage-time goal.

 

 

 

Onyeka was substituted for Arne Maier in the 83rd minute after a strong performance.

 

 

 

According to Bundesliga’s official stats, Onyeka was one of the fastest players on the pitch, reaching a top speed of 32.57 km/h, ranking him third fastest behind Dimitrios Christos Giannoulis (34.73 km/h) and Ruben Vargas (33.56 km/h).
