Abe Sunday, former captain of Sunshine Stars, has officially announced his retirement from professional football, shedding light on the circumstances that led to his decision.
Sunday, who began his career with Sunshine Stars in 2006, revealed that a severe injury sustained during the club’s match against Doma in Gombe played a key role in his exit from the game.
The match, which helped Sunshine Stars escape relegation, came at a personal cost for Sunday, who suffered what could have been a career-ending injury.
Reflecting on the incident, he shared, “God saved me; I almost broke my leg. I’ve been in pain since then, and I’ve had to treat myself.”
Sunday expressed frustration over the lack of support from the club, stating that he was left to bear the financial burden of his treatment.
He revealed that, despite spending over a million naira on medical expenses, the club only contributed 100,000 naira.
“Since then, the new board has not said anything. I’ve sacrificed a lot for the club, but I just need to quit,” Sunday explained, highlighting the club’s non-commitment as a driving factor in his retirement.
In his farewell, Sunday extended his gratitude to God and his fans, saying, “Let me thank God Almighty for seeing me through the years I spent at Sunshine Stars, and thank my fans and supporters for always being there for me.”
The former captain’s departure marks the end of an era for Sunshine Stars, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and leadership.
