Former Rangers defender, Alan Hutton believes Calvin Bassey should be allowed to play in his traditional position from next season.
Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst has been deploying the player in centre-back and left-back position all through the season and Hutton has frowned against the idea.
The young defender is a natural left-back and Hutton suggested that, playing him in different positions could hamper his development.
“van Bronckhorst certainly trusts him in both positions. I think he does really well. I still see him as a full-back,” Hutton said of Bassey’s versatility.
“In terms of that, it can be a bit of a hindrance because you’re not developing in the position that you want to play in.
“But I understand he’s got the attributes to play at centre-back. He’s needed at this moment in time with injuries and so forth he’s needed there.
“You can see in the build up to the second goal what he gives you, that powerful running right till the end.”
“It can be a little bit of a distraction, you want to play in your position, nail that down and get as good as possible.
“I think that will develop as time goes on and the manager gets his own stamp on the team, bringing in his own players.
“Maybe he’ll bring in a centre-back then Bassey can concentrate at left-back,” He told football insider.
Bassey who made his debut for Super Eagles last has played 26 Scottish Premier League matches the Gers this season.
