“Show Us You Belong!” – Ikpe Ekong Challenges CHAN Eagles to Prove Their Super Eagles Potential

Former Nigerian international, Prince Ikpe Ekong, has urged the home-based Super Eagles to seize the opportunity to prove their worth in the upcoming African Nations Championship CHAN qualifiers.

The Super Eagles B squad will face the Black Galaxies of Ghana in a two-legged encounter this December, with the ultimate goal of securing a ticket to the tournament.

For years, debates have persisted about the potential of home-based players to contribute significantly to the national team.

Many argue that these players are more passionate and connected to the country, often playing with unmatched commitment.

In an exclusive interview on Brila FM No Holds Barred with Ifeanyi Udeze, Ikpe stated that the CHAN qualifiers are the perfect stage for the NPFL players to prove they deserve a shot at the senior national team.

“When you go abroad, you realize we are simply kicking oranges in the NPFL,” Ekong said bluntly.

“The training facilities—the difference is clear. No home-based player can be compared to a foreign-based player. The gap is massive.

“We still have a lot to learn in our leagues. Any home-based player who wants to prove they are extraordinary must go through the process.

Once they do, we can identify one or two exceptional talents for the Super Eagles.”

Ekong further emphasized the importance of this qualifier as a proving ground:

“The NPFL players should go out and show us they deserve to step up to the main Super Eagles team.”

The CHAN Eagles have failed to qualify for the last two editions of the tournament, missing out in 2021 and 2023.

Their upcoming clash with Ghana provides a chance to bounce back and redeem themselves after Ghana edged them out on penalties in 2022 to claim a ticket.

The first leg of the qualifiers will take place on Sunday, December 22, at the Accra Sports Stadium, while the return leg is scheduled for Saturday, December 28, at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.

This two-legged battle not only represents an opportunity for revenge against Ghana but also a chance for the home-based Super Eagles to stake their claim for greater integration into the national squad.
