Denmark’s victory against Nigeria at he 1998 FIFA World Cup wars a particularly exciting career highlight says former Danish assistant coach, Flemming Serritslev.
Serritslev, who was involved in Denmark’s technical setup at the time, described the round of 16 matchup as a significant highlight.
“It might not sound very well for Nigerians, but it was one of my best evenings when we actually beat Nigeria 4-1.”
Nigeria entered that match with confidence after a stunning group-stage victories over Spain and Bulgaria.
The strong lineup featuring stars like Taribo West, Jay Jay Okocha, Celestine Babayaro, Sunday Oliseh and the versatile Kanu Nwankwo, was a thrilling prospect Serritslev recalls.
“It was a fantastic Nigerian team… with Uche and Taribo Best in central defense”
“Taribo West on the right side, and he was a fantastic player, really. It was Kanu up front, also an amazing player. However, I think they underestimated us a little bit.”
Serritslev, alongside head coach Bo Johansson, orchestrated a game plan that led to Denmark’s dominance.
“For Nigeria, it was just a matter of having this match against us done, and then they were in the quarterfinals. But that night, we had the upper hand.”
He also discussed Denmark’s narrow loss to Brazil (3-2) in the 1998 World Cup.
“Maybe it was one of the few times we would have a chance to beat Brazil… they were not on top that night, but it was enough.”
