Nigeria’s U17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, are gearing up for their debut at the 2024 World Cup in the Dominican Republic on Wednesday.
Striker Harmony Chidi is determined to make a mark and has high hopes for her team’s performance at the tournament.
The forward player scored 12 goals including two hat-tricks in the qualifiers.
In an interview with FIFA, Chidi revealed her desire to emulate Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen, stating that she draws inspiration from his scoring ability and determination.
“My idols in male football are Erling Haaland and [Victor] Osimhen. I love these two people so much because of the way they score, the way they deliver, their determination. Even when others are not doing well, they will find a way to make it count.”
She is confident in her teammates and the technical crew, led by head coach Bankole Olowookere.
“I believe that we are going to reach the finals, and we are going to bring the medal back. The gold medal! Because we have already worked hard for this; we have made sacrifices for it. So we are going to just leave it for God to do the remaining.”
The Flamingos, who won their first-ever medal at the 2022 edition of the tournament in India, will begin their campaign against New Zealand tomorrow.
