FIFA U20 World Cup: Argentina U20 boss Mascherano confirms resignation defeat to Nigeria

Javier Mascherano says he has decided to quit his role as U20 boss after his side’s elimination from the FIFA U20 World Cup.

Mascherano star revealed he has informed the Argentina Football Association (AFA) boss, but nothing has been decided.

The former Liverpool and Barcelona player is frustrated following his side’s shock exit from the World Cup at the hands of Nigeria.

Argentina bowed out in front of their home fans, losing 2-0, no thanks to two second-half goals from Ibrahim Muhammed and Haliru Sarki.

The defeated brought an end to their 10 consecutive victories at home.

“I have great relationship with AFA President, Claudio Tapia, and I will continue until he doesn’t want me,” Mascherano said.

“He has my resignation letter on his desk but my idea is to continue because I feel I am good enough for this role and as long as they believe the same I will be here.”

Argentina is the most successful side in the history of the competition, winning the title record five times.
