FIFA U17 WWC: Flamingos Kick-off World Cup Campaign with 4-1 Win Over New Zealand

Nigeria got their FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign in style with a 4-1 victory over New Zealand on Wednesday night in Santiago, Dominican Republic.

The match began with an early statement of attack from the Flamingos as Shakirat Moshood found the back of the net just two minutes in, giving Nigeria an immediate 1-0 lead.

Nine minutes later, Faridat Abdulwahab came close to doubling the lead but hit the crossbar in a near-miss.

Nigeria’s pressure paid off again in the 13th minute when Remo Stars Left-back, Taiwo Adegoke scored to make it 2-0.

The Flamingos continued to dominate, and by the 28th minute, Faridat Abdulwahab added a stunning third goal, leaving New Zealand struggling to keep up.

The first half ended 3-0 in favor of Nigeria.

The second half saw Captain Taiwo Afolabi extend Nigeria’s lead to 4-0 in the 55th minute, sealing the game for the Flamingos. New Zealand’s Hannah Saxon managed to pull one back in the 60th minute, but it was too little too late for the Ferns.

Striker Harmony Chidi came close twice in the 75th minute but was unable to convert the chances.

Nigeria maintained their 4-1 lead until the final whistle.
