EXCLUSIVE: Nigeria’s Basketball Woes; Marcel Esonwune Exposes Shocking Lack of Support for Three-on-Three Teams
Marcel Esonwune, Nigeria’s top-ranked three-on-three basketball player, has revealed the dire state of support for the sport in the country.
In an exclusive interview on Brilla FM, Esonwune disclosed that players often have to shoulder logistical, financial, and administrative responsibilities themselves due to the lack of support from the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF).
“We didn’t even have a coach,” Esonwune said. “A member of the team, Deola [Egbe], handles logistics, organizes the squad, and even arranges jerseys. It’s personal expenditure, not a national effort.”
Esonwune recounted how his team, assembled at the last minute for the 2023 African qualifiers, managed to reach the final despite no prior practice sessions. The team’s performance showcased their talent but also exposed systemic neglect.
“When you’re worrying about hotel bookings instead of focusing on a game the next day, it’s tough,” he explained.
Even more concerning is Nigeria’s low ranking in African three-on-three basketball.
Marcel Esonwune attributed this to the lack of domestic tournaments, which prevents the country from earning crucial FIBA ranking points.
Countries like Benin and Madagascar, despite having less talent, rank higher due to consistent grassroots tournaments.
“Anyone can organize a ranking tournament by registering on FIBA’s website, but we need structured national competitions to improve our ranking”.
With the Paris 2024 Olympics out of reach and the sport in limbo, Esonwune urged immediate action to prepare for the 2028 Games. “If we don’t act now, we’ll keep falling behind,” he warned.
