EXCLUSIVE: Bright Osayi-Samuel Narrates Super Lig Match Fracas

Super Eagles and Fenerbahce defender, Bright Osayi-Samuel has revealed the details about the incident that led to the physical confrontation with a Trabzonspor fan after a recent Super Lig match.

After the final whistle, chaos broke on the pitch as some home fans with concealed weapons invaded the pitch, and threatened Fenerbahce players with some reportedly suffering cuts and bruises even in the dressing room.

Osayi-Samuel, in an exclusive chat with Brila Media, recalled the scenes, detailing how the situation snowballed into a melee.

“Yeah, so I think it all started from even before the end of the game; throughout the game, we were getting objects thrown at us, which is normal in Turkey, you know.

“But the extent of how much they were doing it, that game was just too much. You know, I think the referee stopped the game four or five times during the whole game.

“There was one point for me where the keeper got hit and he was bleeding and the ref didn’t stop the game. Even from that little, at that period, at that period, they even scored, you know.”

Bright suggested that the officials were influenced by external factors outside of the pitch that affected their judgement of varying situations during the game.

“So clearly you can see that we’re getting affected by it. The ref didn’t do nothing. I can’t blame him because I don’t think he had the power to. Because a few times he even went back to speak to someone to ask what he can do and they didn’t want to stop the game. I think that’s what sparked it from the start.”

He narrated what happened before the ordeal and indicated that in the reverse fixture Trabzonspor players celebrated on the pitch with no consequences.

“Somehow we still managed to win because we have very good players. Even though they tried to put a lot of obstacles in our way, we still found a way to win. And I think that’s what we did.

“So when we won 3-2, obviously in Turkey, most teams liked to celebrate in the middle of the pitch. And that’s what we did because if I remember when they beat us in our home which was the only game that we’ve lost.

“They done exactly the same thing where they were celebrating in the middle, not trying to provoke fans, so nothing happened there. But when we did that, some fans tried to come out and, you know, with nothing, they had weapons and just trying to attack the team, you know.”

Bright Osayi-Samuel explained his decision to take on the armed fan as an act of self-defence to protect himself and his teammates from getting armed in the fracas.

“Of course, some people say it’s not self-defense, but how can it not be self-defense if someone’s coming with a weapon towards you? And leaving their seats to come onto the pitch, you know.

“So yeah, I just had to defend my team, defend my players. It was a situation I’ve never experienced before, and it was a scary situation, you know.”

“A lot of our players were coming from the changing room with cuts and bruises, how is this even possible in a football pitch for me, I can never understand.

“Just the fact that some players, I could see in the eyes of some other players, were really scared. And I just had to defend my team. Because not everyone can stand up against people. And it was just that.

“I think it was the adrenaline as well. The irritation in my head knowing that they were throwing objects at us from minute one. Yeah, it wasn’t just me, there were other players in the team that also tried to defend the team and yeah.”

As a result of the show of disgrace by the fans of Trabzonspor, Fenerbahce had threatened to leave the Super Lig and the matter is yet to be decided by the league egg-heads.

Bright Osayi-Samuel is also in the camp of the Super Eagles and played in the Super Eagles’ 2-1 victory over Ghana on Friday.
