European Clubs Chase Nigerian Table Tennis Prodigy

There has been a wave of interest surging around Taiwo Mati following his impressive performance as Nigeria’s top player at the World Table Tennis Championships in Durban.

Mati, who currently plays in Portugal’s second division league, has attracted a fleet of prospective offers from elite clubs in Spain and Poland, all keen to sign the player.

The burgeoning talent stated that he is yet to determine what team he will join, indicating that there will be discussions before any decisions are made.

“Three clubs from Spain and Poland have approached me in Durban asking if I could join them for next season,” the Tennis star said.

“But, I am yet to decide where to go as I need to consult before making my decision.

“I am still with my Portuguese club after we failed to gain promotion to the first division last season. I am still pondering on the offers looking for the one that will help me improve my game.”

“Also, some of Nigeria’s top players are also helping out to look for good clubs for me because my performance in South Africa has attracted a lot of interest.”

In the opening round of his World Table Tennis Championship debut, Mati upset seasoned Croat Lubomir Jancarik 4-2.

Mati had to come from behind to overcome Asian star Lam Siu Hang of Hong Kong in the second round of the men’s singles competition, 4-3.

But He vows to perform better at the WTT Contender Series competition in Lagos, at Molade Okoya Indoor Sports Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium Complex.
