Midfielder, Oghenekaro Peter Etebo has defended his decision to join Turkish second-division side Gençlerbirliği, following a period of injury and recovery.
Etebo, who signed with the club during the summer transfer window, believes the move was a thoughtful choice despite offers from top-tier Super Lig teams and Israeli first-division clubs.
The 28-year-old had been sidelined due to injury but trained with Gençlerbirliği during his rehabilitation.
In an interview with SportsBoom.com, Etebo explained why he felt a sense of loyalty towards the club.
“A lot of people were asking, ‘Why would you go to a second-division club in Turkey?'” Etebo said.
“From January till the end of the season, I didn’t pay for anything, and I trained with the group — 100 per cent.”
He also revealed how the club’s support played a significant role in his decision.
“The coach told me: ‘Etebo, even before you sign for any team or go anywhere, remember that these guys took care of you. That’s important.'”
Etebo’s move is a fresh start as he looks to rebuild his career at the Ankara-based club after almost a year without playing football.
The 28-year-old previously played for Galatasaray, Stoke City, Las Palmas, and Getafe elite level.
He’s a prominent member of Nigeria’s 2018 FIFA World Cup squad.
