Taiwo Awoniyi finally found the back of the net as Nottingham Forest secured a vital 2–0 victory over Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium, ending the Nigerian striker’s long wait for a Premier League goal.
Awoniyi’s strike, which was his first since February 11, 2025, brought an end to a frustrating 348-day, 29-match goal drought.
This can be said to be a moment of relief for the Super Eagles forward after a challenging period marked by injuries and limited playing time.
The victory lifts Nottingham Forest to 17th place on the Premier League table.
While they remain in the relegation zone, the result provides renewed hope, with the Tricky Trees now just three points behind Tottenham Hotspur and five clear of West Ham.
A Long Road Back for Awoniyi
The 28-year-old has endured a difficult spell since joining Nottingham Forest from Union Berlin in 2022. Injuries have plagued his Premier League career, with Awoniyi missing a total of 60 matches for the Reds.
Last season, his campaign was severely disrupted after he suffered a damaged abdomen following a collision with the goalpost against Leicester City.
The incident was so serious that Awoniyi had to be placed in an induced coma.
Although he made a full recovery, the former Liverpool forward saw his role at the City Ground significantly reduced.
Despite the setback, Awoniyi continued to work hard behind the scenes, waiting patiently for his opportunity.
Forest arrived at Brentford without a win in their previous three matches, fully aware of the importance of securing all three points in their relegation battle.

Forest Strike Early, Taiwo Awoniyi Finishes Late
Nottingham Forest took the lead just 12 minutes into the contest after Brazilian striker, Igor Jesus opened the scoring after a well-worked move that began with Nigerian winger, Ola Aina down the right flank.
Although the Nigerian defender appeared to have run into traffic, he managed to clip a cross into the box.
Jesus brought the ball down expertly on his chest before volleying into the far corner to give Forest the advantage.
Awoniyi was introduced in the 68th minute, replacing Jesus, and made an immediate impact. Eleven minutes later, the Nigerian forward sealed the victory with a powerful solo effort.
Following a Brentford attack that broke down, Forest captain Morgan Gibbs-White released Awoniyi on the counter.
With little support ahead of him, many expected the striker to hold the ball up, but he had other ideas.
Using his strength, Awoniyi shrugged off his marker before sliding a composed finish into the net, a goal that stands as a strong contender for Premier League goal of the season.
His strike allowed Forest to take control of proceedings and manage the remainder of the game comfortably.
Taiwo Awoniyi Speaks on Faith, Belief, and Fresh Confidence
After the match, Awoniyi spoke candidly about his struggles, renewed confidence, and the faith that sustained him through a difficult period.
“I have always believed this is where I want to be. I have always believed that I am a Premier League player,” Awoniyi said.
“No matter what is going on around me, that has always been my focus.”
“Unfortunately, over the last one and a half years, I haven’t been playing a lot and I haven’t really been involved.”
“The coach came in and brought me back, and that’s something I am really happy about. Getting the goal is also something I am very happy about.”
“I haven’t been playing for a while, so scoring again means a lot to me.”
“The most important thing is that I have always believed in God, I have always believed in myself, and I have always known that He will be there for me no matter what.”

“He’s been knocking on the door” – Dyche Praises Awoniyi’s Response
Nottingham Forest coach Sean Dyche, praised Awoniyi’s performance and revealed that he had spoken to the striker about playing with freedom prior to the match.
“He works hard for us and he’s trained well. Funnily enough, I chatted with him last week and reminded him to be free, and he looked free when he came on,” Dyche said.
“It was a very good finish.”
“He’s been knocking on the door, he’s been working hard for the team and he gets a reward with a really good bit of play and a really fine finish.”
Dyche also commented on Awoniyi’s serious injury last year, acknowledging the striker’s strength of character.
“I know it was very serious. But just generally, get on with it, just come and enjoy yourself.”
“He’s looked sharper and come back to life, let’s say. I had absolutely no doubt in putting him on.”
“I thought, ‘Yeah, absolutely, go and play.’”

Uncertain Future Despite Breakthrough
Taiwo Awoniyi’s long-term future at Nottingham Forest remains uncertain despite ending his goal drought.
He has managed just 204 Premier League minutes this season, and reports suggest he could consider a loan move to the Bundesliga in search of regular football.
German side Mainz 05 are reportedly in talks with Forest over a potential loan deal as the Nigerian forward looks to rebuild his career.
