Enyimba, Remo Stars out of CAF Champions League

Nigeria will have no representative in this season’s CAF Champions League Group phase following the elimination of Enyimba and Remo Stars.

NPFL Champions, Enyimba and Deputy Remo Stars lost out in the first preliminary round to Al Ahly Benghazi and SC Modeame of Libya respectively.

Enyimba, played out a goalless draw in their second leg tie against Al-Ahly Benghazi in Aba, failing to overturn the 4-3 loss they suffered in the first leg.

Remo Stars on the hand, bowed out after 2-3 defeat on penalties after the game ended 1-1 on aggregate.

Medeama goalkeeper, Felix Kyei, saves three spot kicks from Olamilekan Adebayo, Okon Aniekeme and Samuel Anaekwe during the shootout.

For the second consecutive season, Remo Stars have now failed to make it beyond the first round in CAF Club competition.

The exit of both clubs leave Bendel Insurance and Rivers United as the only Nigerian clubs left on the continent.

Benin Arsenal, Bendel Insurance who themselves eliminated ASO Chlef of Algeria in a dramatic shootout will face Morocco’s RS Berkane, while Rivers United will clash with Etoile Filante of Burkina Faso in the next round.

The winners of both tie will qualify for the Group phase of the CAF Confederations Cup.
