“Enforcing NPFL players on Eagles handlers wrong”, Sodje replies Lawmaker Akin Alabi

Former Super Eagles defender Sam Sodje has responded to a tweet credited to a Lawmaker, Akin Alabi, member of the House of Representatives who hinted he wants to raise a motion that will compel Super Eagles manager to include at least two players of the NPFL in Nigeria’s squad at international competitions.

The lawmaker representing the Egbeda/Ona Ara Federal Constituency in Oyo State took to Twitter to solicit opinions of Nigerian football fans to determine if the move would have popular backing.

In a chat with brila.net, Sodje reacted to the tweet by saying that the lawmaker should look for a way to better the local league and not to enforce players on the coaches.

The former Reading player also emphasized that the invitation of players at such level should be based on merit, not by enforcement.

“They shouldn’t be enforcing players on the coaches of the National team, I agreed that home-based players should be given invitation but not by enforcing. ” Sodje told brila.net.
”The lawmakers should be talking of how to restructure the league at the moment, we are not there yet, the Nigerian league needs to get better.
”Our league should be up to standard so that we can get players to the national team, ” he concluded.

The bill if passed will compel national team manager Gernot Rohr to include two players from the domestic leagues in his squads for international tournaments.

Rohr has preferred foreign-based players over their domestic counterparts in the course of his four years in charge of the Super Eagles.
