Ekong targets resounding victory over Sao Tome and Principe

Super Eagles Captain William Troost-Ekong says the team is determined to secure a resounding victory for the team in their upcoming match against Sao Tome and Principe’s Falcons and True Parrots.

Despite already securing qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, Troost-Ekong believes that a victory in this match is crucial for various reasons.

The team aims to maintain a winning mentality as they look ahead to the FIFA World Cup qualifiers commencing in November. As a result, they will not be treating this game as a mere formality, but rather as another significant match.

“Yes, we have already qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, but we want to win this match for a number of reasons,” Ekong said

“We have a new Minister of Sports Development who has hit the ground running. It is good to welcome him with a great win.

“We also need to sustain a winning mentality ahead of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers starting in November. So, we are not going to be taking this game as a dead rubber or whatever people choose to call it. It is another important match as far as we’re concerned.”

Nigeria currently sits at the top of the table with 12 points, two points ahead of second-placed Guinea Bissau.

A victory in Uyo will guarantee Nigeria’s position as group leaders, regardless of the outcome of the Guinea Bissau and Sierra Leone clash.
