Nigerian football fans may have reason to cheer as William Troost-Ekong, eyes a potential return to action for the National team in the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Troost-Ekong, who underwent a surgery for an injury sustained during the Africa Cup of Nations, has been on the road to recovery and could be back in contention sooner than anticipated.
Initially expected to be sidelined for a duration of six months, the 30 year-old’s rehabilitation progress suggests a potential comeback before June, offering a glimmer of hope for Nigeria’s defensive lineup.
With the Super Eagles set to face South Africa and Benin Republic in July, the CB’s return could provide a timely boost to the team’s aspirations in the qualifiers.
“I should be back and fit again in May, but I think it’s probably season over. You never know how rehab will go but I don’t want to rush it because, at my tender age of 30, you have to be smart about these injuries,” He told CNN
He added: “I want to be 100% for next season, 100% right. If I can play at the end of this season that’s great, if not then I will be ready for next season.”
