Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong has shut down speculation about his potential retirement, reaffirming his commitment to the national team.
Speaking ahead of Monday’s AFCON 2025 qualifier against Rwanda, the 31-year-old insists that he still has plenty to offer the Super Eagles.
Troost-Ekong played a key role in Nigeria’s previous AFCON campaign, where the Super Eagles reached the final.
He was instrumental, scoring three goals throughout the tournament, including a strike in the final.
The CB was named the MVP of the tournament.
Having recently earned his 75th cap, Troost-Ekong is one of the most seasoned players in the current squad, sharing the leadership role with the likes of Alex Iwobi and Moses Simon.
Addressing the topic of retirement, he said during a media briefing: “It is a question I get asked a lot by Nigerians, but I think it is a bit too early.
“I am 31 now, and I think I am playing my best football in recent years. We are only talking about 12 months from now, so after that, we will see.”
“It will not be my decision; it will be up to the coaches. Once I feel I am no longer an asset to the team, I will have that discussion.”
“But I still have some targets in sight—that will be the AFCON in 2025 and the World Cup in 2026. We’ll see what happens afterwards.”
With qualification already secured, Nigeria will face the Amavubi of Rwanda on Monday, aiming to end their campaign on a high note and remain unbeaten.
