Super Eagles midfielder, Chidera Ejuke was in action on the final day of the 2023/24 La Liga season, as Sevilla fell 4-2 to Villarreal at the Estadio de la Ceramica.
The Nigerian international, who has had a mixed campaign, made his 25th league appearance for Sevilla, coming on in the 87th minute to replace Spanish winger Suso.
Ejuke ends the season with two goals and several promising displays in a season where Sevilla struggled for consistency.
Villarreal, on the other hand, finished their campaign on a high note, with goals from Yeremy Pino, Álex Baena, and a brace from Pape Gueye securing an emphatic 4–2 victory.
The win saw them end the season fifth on the table with 70 points and a spot in European competition next term.
The Yellow Submarine struck early, with Yeremy Pino opening the scoring just four minutes into the match.
Pape Gueye doubled the lead in the 8th minute, punishing Sevilla’s disjointed start.
Although Djibril Sow pulled one back for Sevilla in the 29th minute, Alex Baena restored Villarreal’s two-goal cushion with a stunning finish in the 39th minute.
Gueye got his second of the night in the 53rd minute to make it 4–1, effectively sealing the game.
Sevilla showed some late fight as Ramón Martínez scored in the 85th minute, but it proved nothing more than a consolation.
It was a tough end to a turbulent season for Sevilla, who finished a disappointing 17th on the league table with 41 points just one point above the relegation zone.
A far cry from the club’s usual top-half aspirations, their narrow escape will now force internal reflection and urgent rebuilding.
For Ejuke, his brief appearance may have been his final act in Sevilla colours, depending on the club’s transfer decisions this summer.
Regardless, his season offered flashes of the attacking spark that made him a standout in previous leagues before suffering injuries.
As the dust settles, Sevilla faces a critical offseason to restore stability and avoid another flirtation with the drop.
