Eguavoen Praises Super Eagles’ Second-Half Response Against Libya

Interim head coach, Austin Eguavoen has admitted that his Super Eagles side delivered a poor first-half performance against Libya, on Friday.

Nigeria laboured to a 1-0 victory over Libya in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier, in Uyo.

Despite boasting considerable attacking talent, the three-time African champions struggled to find rhythm and failed to pose much of a threat throughout the match.

Nigeria’s breakthrough came late in the game when Fisayo Dele-Bashiru converted a pass from Moses Simon to secure the win.

Speaking after the game, Eguavoen acknowledged the poor first half but praised his team’s improved performance in the second.

“I expected us to score more goals, but overall, we’re happy to maintain our top spot,” he said. “I was feeling bad, but we kept pushing and progressing.”

“Emotions were high. Libya defended in numbers, and we’re happy to get the win.”

“We were a bit slow in the first half, but the second half was much better—we played faster and managed to score the goal.”

Nigeria will face Libya again in the return leg on Tuesday.
