Super Eagles interim head coach l, Augustine Eguavoen expressed frustration over the disallowance of his team’s goal in their recent match against Rwanda, calling the decision unjust.
Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman scored a header from Semi Ajayi’s flick, but the goal was ruled out by the referee, who cited a foul on the Rwandan defender.
Video replays later revealed that Ajayi had played the ball cleanly, leading to widespread criticism of the referee’s decision.
Eguavoen was visibly upset by the ruling, stating, “We scored a goal, and everyone in the stadium and around the world saw it was a legitimate goal. Only the referee had a different opinion. It’s unfortunate, but a draw away from home isn’t a bad result.”
Despite the result, Eguavoen praised his team’s overall performance, though he noted missed opportunities.
“We came here with a plan to secure three points, but we didn’t achieve that. The Rwandan team showed respect for us, and we respect them in return.
“They controlled possession well but mainly in their own half. We dominated the game, created chances, and should have converted them.”
Eguavoen also added that it is important for the team concert chances.
“Goals are crucial; they open up the game. We had several clear opportunities that we failed to capitalize on.”
