Edo Queens’ CAFCWL Run in Earns $300,000 – Can New Government Keep Their Dream Alive?

Following Edo Queens’ disrupted dream at the Women’s CAF Champions League, Falconets assistant coach, Mansur Abdullahi believes the team has plenty to be proud of after their impressive continental campaign.

Speaking to Brila.net, Abdullahi highlighted the significance of the team’s performance, particularly the $300,000 prize money they earned from the tournament.

He explained that the funds could be reinvested to improve the squad and prepare for a stronger showing next season.

“It’s unfortunate they will not be able to hold their own at the semi-finals,” Abdullahi said.

“As the first female team in Nigeria to make up to 300,000 US dollars, I think they should be able to build off of that naturally to add more effort. One of their players even emerged in the best 11 of the CAF Women’s Champions League.”

However, the coach is concerned over the potential impact of the change in government in Edo state. He worries that the new administration might not prioritize football, which could affect the team’s future progress.

“My major concern is that the next government should be able to key in and keep the project going, because one thing about government, one government change, interest will not be there.”

“We have seen how the outgoing deputy governor has done wonderfully well in sport and branding football in particular,” Abdullahi continued.

“You can imagine he even played for the Bendel Insurance as a player and is part of the history to make it to the Champions League. So by and large, definitely, this is a lot.”

“300,000 US dollars, when you convert it to naira, you know what it means,” Abdullahi concluded.
