Do not disturb a man who doesn’t want to be disturbed, especially if he already has enough on his plate—that is the sentiment Duke Udi expressed regarding Sadiq Umar late arrival to the Super Eagles camp.
The former Nigeria international addressed Sadiq’s situation candidly, questioning the player’s commitment amid ongoing club struggles.
Sadiq, who has been dealing with form issues at Real Sociedad, was the last player to arrive on Wednesday morning ahead of Nigeria’s AFCON qualifier against Benin Republic.
With no goals and only one assist this season, his late arrival sparked further scrutiny over his inclusion in the squad.
Speaking on Brila FM’s No Holds Barred with Ifeanyi Udeze, the former midfielder suggested that Umar’s attitude might reflect a lack of enthusiasm to represent Nigeria.
“Sadiq’s case seems to be one not wanting to represent the country then you are calling the person. What do you expect?”
“He is a top professional and has made us proud, we are proud of him as well but I like players that can come out straight.”
“If you don’t want to play, it’s fine—just say it. Don’t stroll into camp casually and disrespect the others who are fully committed.”
Frustrated by the situation, Udi questioned why Sadiq Umar was called up, given his limited playtime at Real Sociedad.
“He is not going to play, I don’t even know why they invited him. He has issues with his club Real Sociedad and has not even been playing.”
“He is fighting for a place there so why add more pressure by inviting him to the national team only to sit on the bench? It’s unnecessary stress.”
