Super Eagles forwards Kelechi Iheanacho and Chidera Ejuke made their long-awaited La Liga debuts for Sevilla, but it ended in disappointment with a 2-1 home defeat to Villarreal.
Both Ejuke and Iheanacho joined Sevilla this season and featured in preseason games.
However, neither player made the starting eleven in Sevilla’s opener against Las Palmas last week.
Ejuke was named on the bench, while Iheanacho was absent due to ongoing issues with his La Liga registration.
Last night, when Sevilla faced Villarreal, Iheanacho finally made the bench alongside his compatriot Ejuke.
Sevilla started on a wrong note, conceding just two minutes into the game thanks to a strike from Arnaut Danjuma.
But, Sevilla thought they had equalized in the eighth minute when Juanlu Sanchez found the back of the net, but the goal was disallowed after a VAR review confirmed offside.
Despite this setback, Sevilla managed to level the score in first-half stoppage time, with Dodi Lukebakio finding the net to make it 1-1.
Just after Villarreal goal was chalked off due to offside, coach Pimienta introduced Ejuke in the 71st minute, hoping to inject some creativity into Sevilla’s attack.
Iheanacho was brought on in the 77th minute. While Ejuke made his presence felt with six successful dribbles, Iheanacho was also active but couldn’t make a significant impact.
