Diego Maradona offered up his retired No 10 shirt at Napoli to Lorenzo Insigne – during a city ceremony which soon descended into chaos with the former striker sitting partially topless on the roof of a car.
Maradona was back in Naples to receive honorary citizenship of the city and looked a little worse for wear when instructed to cut a cake at the prestigious bash.
Clutching a drink in one hand Maradona made a unconvincing stab at dicing up the cake before scenes rapidly escalated, resulting in the former World Cup winner sitting on top of a vehicle outside the ceremony while removing his shirt.
Crowds had gathered outside the venue to get a glimpse of their hero, though probably didn’t expect to see Maradona surrounded by security and ushered to get back down to the pavement.
The 56-year-old lapped up the attention and sat atop the vehicle with his arms outstretched, looking a little dazed as fans chanted his name.
The Napoli legend had previously been talking up his former club’s chances of challenging for the Serie A title next season.
Key to that would be Insigne, Napoli’s No 24. The 26-year-old hit 20 goals last season as an important creative influence in the Light Blues’ third-place finish in Serie A.
Napoli retired the No 10 shirt in honour of Maradona back in 2000 – but now their Argentine legend has joked his old squad number could be back on the table.
